Four awards for Evangelist
For the seventh time in the last eight years, The Evangelist has won a national award for its annual teen issue.
In addition, The Evangelist took three other prizes during the recent Catholic Press Association convention, held in Denver. The membership of the CPA includes 200 Catholic newspapers in North America, which compete for annual prizes.
For its coverage during 1996, The Evangelist was given:
* A third prize for best spiritual life column to Kate Blain, assistant editor, who writes "Good News for Kids" each week. The judges, drawn from the secular and religious press, said that writing a column "dealing with biblical truths without being dogmatic or demanding is a difficult task, but this writer handled it with simplicity and charm. This style would appeal to children."
* An honorable mention for best reporting on a special age group for The Evangelist's annual issue devoted to teenage Catholics. This special issue, which appears in November, has won an award from the CPA in seven out of the last eight years.
* An honorable mention for best editorial on a local issue to James Breig, editor.
* An honorable mention for best column on culture, the arts and leisure to James Breig, editor, for his weekly TV column, titled "Tuned In."
Besides the CPA awards, a staff writer, Maureen McGuinness, was a finalist for the Eileen Egan Journalism Award from Catholic Relief Services for coverage of the Third World. She was cited for an interview with a student from Siena College in Loudonville who traveled to India to work among the poor with Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity.
