Football and soccer highs and lows
After two dominating performances to open up the season, fans and students at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School in Schenectady were beginning to feel optimistic about their usually unsuccessful team.
But those feelings were put on hold, at least for a day, as Gibbons fell to Rensselaer 49-14 on Sept. 19.
Derrek Pitts produced all the scoring for ND-BG (2-1, 1-1) with a passing touchdown to Victor Villanueva and a rushing touchdown. They will try to get back on track Sept. 26 when they play Whitehall at home.
Since the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah was celebrated Sept. 18, many high school football games were played Sept. 17. But lately, the team from LaSalle Institute in Troy has won whenever they play. Tyler Washing-ton ran for 104 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Cadets defeated Colonie 21-0 on the road.
The win improved LaSalle to 3-0 on the season, and they have outscored their opponents 76-23.
Bishop Maginn High in Albany opened its Class A season on Sept. 17, also winning convincingly. Tymear Mallory had three rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown, as the Griffins (2-1,1-0) defeated Averill Park (1-2, 0-1) 25-7.
It's been a different story for Christian Brothers Academy this season: The Colonie school squandered a 21-15 lead with seven seconds left and fell to Guilderland 22-21, dropping the Brothers to 0-3 on the season. Jack Reilly threw for two touchdowns, both to Max Weaver, in the losing effort.
Action continued Sept. 18 with Saratoga Central Catholic (1-2) winning its first game of the year, defeating Fort Edward (1-2) 27-16 and Catholic Central High (0-3) in Troy losing to Taconic Hills (1-2) 26-15.
Boys Soccer
In a match-up of two Catholic schools, Catholic Central defeated LaSalle 3-2 on Sept. 17. Max Sergovich had 10 saves to improve CCHS to 2-2 on the year. The loss was LaSalle's first of the year, snapping a five-game winning streak.
