Two years ago, the Albany Diocese began Renew 2000, our spiritual renewal program to celebrate the millennium Jubilee. For four seasons, thousands of participants have gathered in small faith communities to pray, to reflect on God's word, and to support and challenge each other to live lives of faith and service.

People have been overwhelmingly positive about their experiences: * "There has been a great deepening of faith and especially in prayer life."

* "The small faith-sharing groups were a very positive experience."

* "Everyone is building better communication and feelings of belonging with each other."

* "Being part of Renew 2000 has enlivened our parish and continues to do so."

* "The spiritual bonding of our members was great."

* "Excitement and level of involvement remained high."

* "Suggestions for living our faith brought forth some wonderful results. We have become aware of each other's strengths, weaknesses, dreams, sorrows and successes."

Season 5 of Renew 2000 begins Sept. 24, and parish leaders will soon be inviting parishioners to join a small faith community. They will be extending a special invitation to those who have not yet joined and emphasize that the small faith communities are for everyone.

The theme for Season 5 is "Renewing for the 21st Century." The sessions will encourage us to reflect on how we can continue to grow in our faith and build up our communities in 2001 and beyond.

Our diocesan leadership is committed to supporting small faith communities as a permanent part of parish life. Through Renew 2000, we have gained the confidence and experience to allow these communities to grow and thrive in the parishes of our Diocese.

In the meantime, let's enjoy Season 5. We can be confident that it is not a back porch -- but a threshold!
