PROFESSOR TO SPEAK
Faith and science topic of Lenten talk
"God After Darwin" is the subject of an upcoming talk on religion and science at Christ Sun of Justice parish at RPI in Troy.
The talk, which is the last in a Lenten series, will be given by John F. Haught, a professor of theology at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Haught's area of specialization is systematic theology, with an interest in issues pertaining to science, cosmology, evolution, ecology and religion.
"Darwin's evolution theory really destroyed any plausible notion" of the creationist view of the origin of life, Dr. Haught told The Evangelist. "It really is impossible to 'map' his story of evolution onto" the story of creation in the Bible. "An additional problem is that too many Christians today tend to look at Scripture as a direct and accurate source of history, which it isn't.
"However, there is an alternative theory, growing in popularity, called 'Intelligent Design,' which says that human biology and evolution are both so complex that they require the creative hand of an intelligent force. Darwin knew nothing of genetics in his day. With what we know now, his evolution theory can be modified somewhat."
Can religion and science be combined? "Teilhard de Chardin wrote extensively on this subject," he said, referring to a French Jesuit (1881-1955) renowned for his scientific expertise. "As a paleontologist, he could see where evolution was related to the theory of Divine Providence, and many 20th-century theologians were greatly influenced by him.
"I want to get participants thinking about the alternatives to each theory by presenting subtle proposals and provide several ways in which people can respond to the challenges presented."
(Dr. Haught is the author of many books, including "Deeper Than Darwin: the Prospects for Religion in the Age of Evolution." His talk will take place March 16, 7 p.m., after a meatless potluck supper at 6. For information, call 274-7793.)
