In a pulpit letter read at Masses Jan. 19-20, Bishop Howard J. Hubbard told parishioners of Holy Trinity parish in Schaghticoke-Johnsonville-Valley Falls that he had accepted recommendations to close the church buildings at the latter two sites, effective July 1.

Holy Trinity was formed in 2000 from three churches: St. John's in Schaghticoke, St. Monica's in Johnsonville and Our Lady of Good Counsel in Valley Falls.

After more than a year of study on the economics of maintaining three church buildings, the parish council, and the finance and renovation committees recommended closing the two church buildings to centralize worship in Schaghticoke.

"I know that this decision will be very difficult for many of you, but I also recognize that one community does not need three churches," the Bishop stated in his letter.

He also indicated that the merged Holy Trinity parish is based on the foundations of all three parishes, and "it is this base that strengthens who we are, and will help us to be a vital and viable parish serving the people of our community."

In his letter, Bishop Hubbard called for the formation of an implementation committee, to be headed by Rev. Gregory Weider, pastor, and comprised of parish leaders and committee chairpersons. They are to determine the disposition of the buildings that will be closed.

"While there is great sadness in this decision," the Bishop concluded, "we must never neglect to give thanks to God for the many years of faith celebrated in these churches."

Weekend Masses are currently celebrated at all three churches: in Schaghticoke at 8:30 a.m. on Sundays, in Valley Falls at 11 a.m. on Sundays and in Johnsonville at 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays. The three churches are located within a few miles of one another.
