BISHOP'S MESSAGE

Education tax credit needs Catholic support

By BISHOP EDWARD B. SCHARFENBERGER- | Comments: 0 | Leave a comment

Last week, the bishops of New York State urged Catholics to contact Gov. Andrew Cuomo through the website of the New York State Catholic Conference (www.nys-catholic.org), asking the Governor to use his leadership to get the Education Tax Credit passed.

Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger wrote to Catholics in the Albany Diocese: "The proposed Education Investment Tax Credit, which is backed by the vast majority of our legislators and a broad, ecumenical coalition that goes well beyond partisan and denominational lines, now needs an expression of grassroots support to break the logjam of just a few power-brokers.

"As you may be aware, Cardinal Timothy Dolan [of the Archdiocese of New York] has prepared a YouTube ad which highlights Gov. Cuomo's key role in enabling this to happen, and is following up with a written statement that summarizes the importance of this bill and the role each of our parishioners of all ages can play right now.

"I am asking you to help me get this message out to everyone throughout our Diocese. Any other way in which you through your leadership can personally encourage this vital grassroots action will be timely and most appreciated.

"The cardinal is in ongoing communication with the Governor, and we may be at a turning point. The time to turn the corner is now for our children, our teachers, our schools - our future! If every one of us does something, we will make a difference.

"God bless you in all that you do - and especially at important moments like this, when we must rise to the occasion. You have my admiration and continual support and prayer."

Here is the official statement from Cardinal Dolan and the state's bishops:

"More than 200 Catholic schools have closed in the last 15 years throughout New York State as families and parishes who strongly believe in the value of Catholic education struggle to keep up with increasing costs. Many of our public schools also desperately need help.

"To address these needs, the New York State Catholic bishops joined a broad coalition of faith groups, community organizations and labor unions backing legislation called the Education Investment Tax Credit. The measure would encourage increased charitable donations to generate more private scholarships as well as dedicated additional resources to public schools. It also helps all teachers provide needed materials and supplies for every classroom in New York.

"The vast majority of legislators support the bill. Why? It's because the legislation will help all children, regardless of where they go to school. It's a win-win for all families!

"Although Governor Cuomo assured us he would fight to include the proposal in the state budget, in the end, we were left out.

"As the legislative session ends in Albany this week, we pray that Gov. Cuomo won't let us down. We ask that you join us in that prayer. Pray that Gov. Cuomo will put children ahead of politics and fight for the Education Investment Tax Credit.

"We also ask that you contact him immediately with that same message. Time is short. Please act today. God bless you."[[In-content Ad]]
