Earning some interest
Jesus, help me not to "bury" what I have, but to share it! Amen.
"Heaven," Jesus said, "is like a man who gave his servants money. One servant got two coins and used them to earn four; another used five coins to earn ten. A third got one coin, but just buried it to keep it safe. The first two servants told the master, 'I earned twice what you gave me.' They were rewarded. But the third servant said, 'I buried your money so I wouldn't lose it.' The master said, 'Lazy! You didn't earn any extra.' He took the coin away and gave it to the servant with ten coins." Jesus finished, "Those who use what they have will get more, but those who don't will lose it."
Do you have a bank you put money in to save up for something special, or even a bank account where you put money from birthdays and holidays to save for the future?
It can be really hard not to spend money. There are so many things you want! But you know that, if you keep your money in the bank, it will earn "interest" - the extra money you get for keeping it there. Then you'll end up with even more.
This week's Gospel (Matthew 25:14-30) is about trying to save money. Jesus tells a story about three men given money by their boss to see how they handle it. Two men invest their share - like putting it in the bank - and proudly give their boss the interest they earned.
The third guy is so scared to lose the money, he buries it in a hole! Naturally, he doesn't end up with any extra, and his boss is so annoyed, the guy gets in big trouble.
It's hard, when you get a little money, not to spend it. Putting it in a bank can help. Jesus' point wasn't really about money, though. His story reminded people to use what we have. If you're good at math, can you help classmates who aren't? If your school is having a clothing drive, can you give some clothes you don't need?
Don't bury what you have in the ground. Earn some interest![[In-content Ad]]
