Good News for Kids

Do what you love most

What do you do that sounds crazy to other people? Some kids practice the piano every day, hoping they'll be musicians someday. Others visit people in nursing homes or play basketball.

People might think you're crazy for spending so much time on what you love, but to you, it's more important than anything.

Jesus felt the same way. In this week's Gospel (Mark 3:20-35), we hear about it.

When Jesus told people to change their lives and follow God, some thought He was crazy or bad. Jesus' family even came to see what was going on. But when He heard they were there, Jesus just said, "Anyone who follows God is my brother and sister and mother."

When something is very important to you, you'll spend a lot of time and energy on it. You might practice your music instead of watching TV, or give up a Saturday to visit a nursing home.

Jesus gave up a lot for His work, too. He left His hometown and His mother to travel around and teach people about God. Sometimes, He was so busy He didn't have time to eat!

Some kids get teased for doing what they love. People who don't understand why you like visiting a nursing home might make fun of you. But if they really love you, they'll try to understand -- and other kids who have the same hobbies will like you more!

Jesus was made fun of a lot for asking people to change their lives. They said He was crazy and even said He had a devil in Him. But like a kid who loves a hobby, Jesus wouldn't stop just because He got teased. And just like you meet other kids who like what you do, Jesus said that anyone who listened to Him and followed God was like a brother to Him!

It's hard to work on something that other people say is crazy. But Jesus taught us that when you're doing good work, it's not crazy or bad.

In fact, God can already see how your work is going to come out, and Jesus is proud of you for trying!

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me to work at the things I love most! Amen.
