Do a small miracle
Adults are always asking kids, "What do you want to do when you grow up?" No one ever asks, "What are you doing right now?" Adults forget that some small things kids do can help the world in big ways!
In a way, this week's Gospel (John 2:1-11) proves that kids can do a lot to change the world. Jesus just does a small miracle -- turns water into wine -- but it matters a lot to the people He helps!
Jesus and Mary went to a wedding, and the guests there drank all the wine. Mary knew Jesus could help, so she told Him, "They have no more wine." Jesus saw the jugs of water people used to wash their hands. "Have the waiter taste it," He said. The waiter tried it and said, "They've saved the best wine until now." The water had turned into wine!
Even if grownups forget, kids know you can help people in a lot of ways. Some kids spent Christmas giving out food to poor people or collecting toys for other children who are poor. Other kids joined "Save the Children," a group that helps kids around the world who are hurt, who have to work and can't go to school.
Jesus knew about little miracles like that. In the Gospel story, He was at a wedding and knew His friends were embarrassed -- they ran out of drinks for everyone! With Mary's encouragement, Jesus helped them out by turning some water into wine.
Kids can "turn water into wine," too: You can do something special to help people who need it. If you don't know what to do, start small: Ask your family to help you write to kids in the hospital or visit old people at a nursing home. Ask if anyone at your church knows someone who needs snow shoveled, and do that -- for free.
You don't have to wait until you grow up to change the world. After all, Jesus just gave people something to drink, and He changed a whole wedding!
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me find some way I can change the world! Amen.
