Spring Enrichment began in 1973. Sponsored each May by the diocesan Office of Evangelization, Catechesis and Family Life, Spring Enrichment has evolved from a forum for those in catechetical ministry to receive training toward diocesan certification into offering support for other ministries as well, including pastoral care and liturgy.
Under the oversight of the diocesan Catholic Schools Office, next year's Spring Enrichment will see:
• a schedule change. For many years, the program has run from Monday through Thursday with four sessions each day; to be accessible to more people, it will move to a Wednesday-to-Saturday schedule, running May 18-21.
• more locations. For 20 years, Spring Enrichment has been held at The College of Saint Rose in Albany; having tested a "satellite site" at St. Mary's parish in Oneonta last year, the 2016 Spring Enrichment will include programs at Bishop Maginn High School in Albany, St. Henry's parish in Averill Park, Our Lady of the Annunciation parish in Queensbury, St. Francis de Sales parish in Herkimer and St. Mary's parish in Oneonta. The regional sites will include in-person presentations, talks recorded at Saint Rose earlier in the week and live-streamed presentations via the internet.
• a broader scope. Spring Enrichment will continue providing opportunities for catechists, youth ministers and Catholic school teachers, but will add more offerings for people in other ministries and aspects of parish life, including hour-long mini-sessions on specific topics.
Stephen Mawn, diocesan director of catechist formation and of the Spring Enrichment program, noted that the changes are a result of listening sessions and a survey of employees at the diocesan Pastoral Center in Albany and of pastors, parish life directors, catechetical and youth ministry leaders and Catholic school principals.
