Dance unites faiths
Catholics and Jews will come together for an evening of interfaith partnership on Oct. 22 for "Peace Begins With Me" at Temple Beth Emeth in Albany.
The event will feature a dance performed by Risa Jaroslow, whose company is in residence at University Settlement in New York City. Titled "A Jew in Poland," the dance, a 13-minute solo based upon her first trip to Poland, will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Bishop Howard J. Hubbard, Joan Dunham and Dr. Anschel Weiss.
"Peace Begins With Me" is the latest in an ongoing series of interfaith events coordinated by the United Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York's Committee on Aging and the diocesan Commission on Aging. During the past nine years, the two groups have offered events at churches and synagogues to celebrate the shared heritage between Catholics and Jews, and the differences that make each faith tradition unique.
Teaching people to respect one another's religious beliefs is the goal of the events, and "Peace Begins With Me" should do the same, according to Dr. Rose Kriss, chairperson. She has seen "A Jew in Poland" in New York City and hopes that people who attend the dance will appreciate Catholic and Jewish collaboration a little bit more. "I hope their spirit of tolerance and understanding of other people is affirmed," she said.
