After being ranked No. 3 in last week's NSCAA/Adidas Division II poll, The College of Saint Rose women's soccer team survived a scare from Stonehill, winning their home opener 2-1. It was the 14th consecutive home opener won by the women from the Albany college.
After allowing the tying goal to score in the 78th minute, Saint Rose's Derith Fernandes took advantage of a defensive miscue by Stonehill and scored the game-winning goal. The victory improved Saint Rose to 4-0 and 2-0 in the Northeast-10 conference.
FOOTBALL
LaSalle followed up its week one victory over Saratoga with a dominating performance against arch-rival CBA Sept. 11. Tyler Washington rushed for two touchdowns, and quarterback Mike Murray threw for two more as the Troy school (2-0) cruised to a 34-7 victory over the Brothers of Colonie (0-2).
Meanwhile, another match-up of two Catholic schools took place Sept. 12 in Schenectady, as host Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School defeated Saratoga Catholic, 36-18. Quarterback Derrick Pitts rushed for two touchdowns then added two more through the air for Gibbons (2-0, 1-0). Dale Long had a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown for Spa Catholic.
Bishop Maginn High in Albany lost to Gloversville 51-6 and Catholic Central High School in Troy was defeated 34-18 by Voorheesville.
BOYS' SOCCER
LaSalle continued its hot start by shutting out CBA 3-0 on Sept. 10. Brendan Hoffman had a goal and two assists to improve LaSalle to 4-0 overall, 2-0 in Big Ten play. In LaSalle's four games this year, they have allowed only one goal.
GIRLS' SOCCER
After a 3-0 start, Catholic High fell 1-0 on Sept. 10 to Schenectady, then bounced back Sept. 12 to defeat Voorheesville by the same score. Barb Falzo scored the game-winning goal for CCHS with seven minutes to play, improving the team to 4-1.
Lexi Cuomo recorded 12 saves in the victory and eight in the loss.
