GOOD NEWS FOR KIDS
Company all around us
Jesus, help me look around at people and nature when I need company! Amen.
Jesus sent out the 12 Apostles, two by two, to teach people everywhere about God. He told them not to take food, extra clothes or even money, but to depend on people along the way to help them out. The Apostles went off and taught, and cured many sick people.
Why do people have pets? Most of the time, people get a cat, dog, bird or guinea pig for company. Pets give you someone to talk to or play with, even when no one else is around.
Pets are second only to people in being good company. Pets are friendly and playful, but people can talk back when you need someone to talk to!
That's why, in the Gospel story (Mark 6:7-13), Jesus sends out the Apostles in pairs of two to teach people about God. Jesus knows it's always better to have company; you don't get bored and you have someone to support you.
A pet is another good support -- and even if you don't have an "official" pet of your own, summer is a great time to explore nature. There are animals all around you! Even when you think you're alone (and bored) in a backyard or park, there are birds in the trees, squirrels romping in the grass and ants to watch as they work on their anthills.
Jesus sent the Apostles out to teach in pairs so they wouldn't be alone, but He gave us pets and other animals so we wouldn't be alone, either. It's always easier to get something done -- or just have fun -- when you have company!
