Is Bart Simpson a sinner? Is Marge Simpson a saint? What is the difference among spirituality, religion and faith? Is there an elephant in your living room?

Those intriguing questions will be answered at the Jubilee 2000 Intercollegiate Celebration. With the theme of "Peace is more than the absence of war," the event will be held Oct. 14, 12:30-7:15 p.m., at the Chapel and Cultural Center at RPI in Troy.

Sponsored by the Office of Campus Ministry of the Albany Diocese, the program will host students from Siena, St. Rose, Maria, community colleges throughout the 14-county Diocese, members of the SUNY system and other colleges, such as Russell Sage, Union, Skidmore and Albany Law School. Young adults from parishes throughout the Albany Diocese will also participate.

The keynote speakers will be national recording artists Kim and Reggie Harris, who, along with Bishop Howard J. Hubbard, will welcome young adults to an afternoon of eight workshops, fellowship and sharing, Mass, prayer, and a millennium celebration dinner.

According to Sister Maureen O'Leary, FSP, organizer of the celebration, the Campus Ministry office wanted a celebration that would empower young adults.

"Fifteen years ago, in the National Conference of Catholic Bishops' letter to campus ministers, 'Empowered By The Spirit,' six aspects of campus ministry were outlined: forming faith communities on campus, appropriating the faith on campus, forming a Christian conscience, educating for justice and peace, facilitating personal development, and developing leaders for the future. This is what Jubilee 2000 celebration will address," she said.

Topics

Young adults can choose from workshops in such areas as mediation, spirituality, faith and religion, "the Elephant in the Living Room," the theology of "The Simpsons," sexuality, and Christians in the marketplace.

Despite the many changes that have occurred since the bishops' letter was written, Sister O'Leary feels that there is much that remains "remarkably relevant" today.

"We looked at this Jubilee year and the new millennium as the perfect opportunity to come together as Church and celebrate our faith experience from the perspective of our young adults," she said.
