'PETER'S PENCE'
Collection aids pope in charity
For 145 years, popes have relied on Catholics around the world to help the poor; provide emergency assistance for victims of oppression, disaster, hunger and war; and show their support, solidarity and commitment.
This year, the Annual Collection for the Works of the Holy Father -- formerly known as Peter's Pence -- will be taken up in the Albany Diocese at Masses July 30-31.
The collection's theme is "Goodness Works Quietly."
Bishop Howard J. Hubbard, in a letter read at Masses throughout the Diocese last weekend, said: "Through works of charity, Catholics provide a quiet but powerful witness of love and deeds to empower the weak, the defenseless and the voiceless, and to sustain those who suffer.
"As we participate in this special appeal, we join with the more than one billion Catholics worldwide in a loving expression of solidarity. We share in the concern of the successor of Peter for the many different needs of the universal Church and for the relief of those most in need around the globe."
U.S. Catholics provide nearly half the total collected each year. Ninety-eight cents of each dollar contributed directly supports Pope Benedict XVI's spiritual and charitable works.
"I ask you to consider contributing to the collection this year, and I am grateful for your generosity," said Bishop Hubbard. "Together, let us ask the Lord to bless the Holy Father and us, as well as those in need throughout the world."
