Collection aids CUA
A collection this weekend at Masses in parishes throughout the Albany Diocese will benefit the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
"The financial sacrifices required of Catholic parents today to provide a truly Catholic college education are enormous," wrote Bishop Howard J. Hubbard in a pulpit letter read last week in churches across the Diocese.
"All of the funds received through the collection help defray these costs in the form of financial aid. Your contributions directly benefit students from all over the United States, including our own Diocese, by funding scholarships for those who would not otherwise be able to attend."
Background
Catholic University, founded in 1903, is the national university of the Catholic Church in America. It is also the only Catholic member of the prestigious Association of American Universities.
Catholic University has the only school of canon law in the U.S., preparing students for the practice of canon law in diocesan and religious administration and in ecclesiastical tribunals.
It is also the only American university approved by the Vatican to grant canonical degrees in the areas of theology, canon law and philosophy.
Students can also choose from 83 bachelor's programs, 105 master's programs and 55 doctoral programs. One-fourth of the student body comes from New York and other Mid-Atlantic states.
Where money goes
Donations to the collection will assist the University in offering $3,000 Parish Scholarships to incoming freshmen.
They will also enable CUA's student body to volunteer through the campus ministry program by building houses for the poor, serving in homeless shelters, tutoring at-risk children and many other pursuits.
"Catholic University has a special responsibility to educate future leaders for our Church and for our nation," Bishop Hubbard said. "In this sense, the Catholic University of America belongs to all of us in the Church, regardless of where we live. Grounded in the philosophy of Catholic intellectual tradition, students are well prepared for success in life and ready to make a difference in today's world. I encourage you to join me in supporting this most worthwhile educational initiative. Again, I am grateful for your continual generosity."
