Collection aids Catholic University
Founded by the U. S. Catholic bishops in 1887, Catholic University, located in Washington, D.C., educates thousands of students from all 50 states and 106 foreign countries.
Originally, the school was established as a graduate and research institution; undergraduates were invited to pursue liberal and professional education in 1904.
Fields of study
Catholic University's law schools educate both diocesan tribunal lawyers and their civil lawyers. The School of Religious Studies, meanwhile, prepares many of the biblical, moral, Church history and religious education teachers in Catholic seminaries, schools and parishes.National studies on the priesthood, seminarians, laity, permanent diaconate, Catholic education and multiculturalism progress in the Center for the Study of Religion and Culture.
The School of Philosophy offers one of the oldest doctoral programs in the United States and is known for its work in classical and medieval philosophy, for its contributions to the study of 19th-century German philosophy, and for its advancement of the phenomelogical movement.
Catholic University also provides education to Third World dioceses that don't have the means to educate their own laity, priests, sisters and brothers. Courses also are offered in such areas as nursing, social work, architecture, drama and music at Catholic University.
Bishop's support
In a pulpit letter, Bishop Howard J. Hubbard asked that Catholics contribute to the annual collection for the Catholic University of America as they have in past years.Last year, $86,047 was raised in the Albany Diocese for the collection.
"Your financial and prayerful support and that of Catholics throughout the United States have enabled the University to continue its important educational mission. I well recall and am grateful for your generosity in the past and urge your wholehearted support of this year's Appeal," he said.
