Children should be heard and seen

I would like to see my parish become more youth friendly. A parish that is more in tune with the thinking of youth would make learning about Christian culture more fun and entertaining, as well as educational, for kids. It would also make the children want to become good parishioners when they grow older and become adults.

Currently, the only activities for children in the church that I belong to are religious education classes, a Christmas youth choir and Christmas caroling. If I were in a leadership position, I would encourage kids to speak out more so the church could see what the kids thought of issues inside and outside the parish.

I would recommend a parish newspaper or newsletter, which would be written and published by the children, as one way for kids to speak out and to put their writing skills to good use. Each month, kids could write something about what is going on in the news, inside and outside the parish, such as things that face our religion today.

I would also let the kids choose religious education activities, such as finding out certain Bible-or church-related things or exploring the Bible or other church-related things to make religious education more fun. These activities could also be written about and included in the newspaper.

Current issues facing our religious could be posted on the bulletin board to see what the kids think. These issues could be debated in religious education classes and summarized for the newspaper.

I would also encourage more fund-raisers for more religious education class field trips to places the Albany Cathedral or possibly to meet the Bishop. I think field trips are a fun and educational way to learn more about the Church today and its history.

I would have the smaller children read stories out of the Bible and have them write a little summary and draw a picture showing their favorite part to make reading the Bible more fun.
