CCHS, LaSalle roll as '09 season begins
As the high school sports fall season began last weekend, the Catholic Central High School girls' soccer team in Troy could not have asked for a better start.
Julie McNeff began the season with a bang, scoring three goals in a 4-0 opening game victory against Cohoes on Friday, then coming back on Saturday and scoring the only goal of the game against South Glens Falls, as CCHS (2-0) pitched back-to-back shutouts.
Goalie Lexi Cuomo had 19 saves combined in the two games, saving seven against Cohoes (0-1) and 12 against South Glens Falls (1-1).
Boys' soccer
Much like the Catholic High girls, the season started off on the right foot for the boys at LaSalle Institute in Troy, who beat Cohoes 4-0 on Friday and Lansingburgh 5-1 on Saturday.
Goalie Alex Pakater made three saves against Cohoes (0-2) as four different players scored for the Cadets (2-0). On Saturday, Ted Dagestino and Billy Hoffman had two goals apiece, and Tyler Reed contributed with a goal of his own along with an assist.
Football
The 2009 football season kicked off with all four local Catholic schools in action.
Saratoga was the scene for two games on Friday night with LaSalle defeating Saratoga Springs 21-16, and Saratoga Central Catholic falling to Salem 16-13.
Senior quarterback Mike Murray connected with fellow senior receiver Lou DiNovo for two touchdown passes for LaSalle (1-0).
Spa Catholic (0-1) held a 13-0 lead at halftime, but Salem (1-0) scored 16 unanswered points to pull off the league win. Runningback Dave Mulachy rushed for a touchdown and a two-point conversion for Spa Catholic.
Elsewhere, Bishop Maginn's Tymear Mallory was leading the Albany school's Griffins (1-0) to a 20-17 victory over Amsterdam (0-1). Mallory rushed for 213 yards with a touchdown and had an interception on defense.
In Colonie, CBA running back/kicker Jack Reilly was doing all he could to help his team, rushing for three touchdowns and kicking all three extra points, but it was not enough as the Brothers (0-1) fell to Colonie (1-0), 29-20.
