CBA triumphs statewide; Siena falls in tourney
On March 21 at the Glens Falls Civic Center, CBA took on Half Hollow Wills West, the No. 1-ranked team in New York, for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA title.
Galal Cancer led the Brothers with 19 points and Kameron Ritter added 17 as CBA used a 201-12 second quarter to run past Half Hollow Hills West 71-53 to capture its first-ever state championship. Max Weaver also had 15 points.
CBA now moves on to the Federation Tournament of Champions, where they will play Christ the King, from Queens, on March 27.
The Siena Saints men's basketball team came into their NCAA Tournament game against Purdue with one thing on their mind: a third consecutive first-round upset.
After taking a 32-29 lead into halftime, the Loudonville school looked poised to do just that. However, this time the No. 4-seeded Boilermakers were too much for the No. 13-seeded Saints.
Purdue came out strong in the second half, at one point leading by as much as 15. Siena was able to trim the lead to as little as three with 49 seconds left, but were unable to get any closer, losing 72-64.
Edwin Ubiles led Siena with 18 points. Ryan Rossiter and Alex Franklin also contributed double-doubles - Rossiter with 10 points and 13 rebounds and Franklin with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Siena ended its season 27-7, possibly concluding the team's most successful four-year run in school history, which included three MAAC championships and two NCAA Tournament victories.
