Catholic schools continue strong showings
Normally, losing a starting quarterback would slow some teams down, but not LaSalle Institute. With senior quarterback Mike Murray out with a knee injury, the Troy school had to turn to backup Garrett DeLeroy, and he did not disappoint.
DeLeroy completed 14 of 17 passes and threw for 201 yards along with four touchdown passes as LaSalle (4-0/2-0) rolled over Shaker 40-7.
LaSalle also got contributions from Lou DiNovo, who had two touchdown catches and 105 yards receiving; and Tyler Washington, who added a rushing touchdown along with a receiving touchdown.
LaSalle isn't the only Catholic high school in the Albany Diocese having a stellar season: In Schenectady, Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School responded to their first loss of the season last week by beating Whitehall 35-6. Victor Villanueva ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Derrick Pitts added two rushing touchdowns of his own, as ND-BG improved to 3-1 (2-1 Class D).
After starting the season with four straight home games, ND-BG will play its final three games on the road before the playoffs begin.
GIRLS' SOCCER
After losing the opening game of the season, the girls' soccer team from the Academy of the Holy Names in Albany has bounced back, winning their next five games, two of which included shutout victories over Watervliet and Ravena last week.
On Sept. 24, Quinn Massaroni (also an intern for The Evangelist) had three goals and an assist and Kierra Moore had three goals of her own, as Holy Names beat Watervliet 6-0. The two girls teamed up a day later, with Moore scoring two goals and Massaroni adding another, as Holy Names defeated Ravena 3-0.
Both wins improve Holy Names to 5-1-0 (4-1-0 Colonial).
SAINT ROSE WOMEN
The women of The College of Saint Rose in Albany continued to roll Sept. 25, going on the road to defeat Saint Anslem 1-0. It was the sixth shutout of the year, the third consecutive, for the undefeated Golden Knights (9-0-0/6-0-0), who came into the game ranked No. 3 in the NSCAA/Adidas Division II poll.
Sophomore forward Nicola D'Errico scored the only goal of the game in the ninth minute, getting the assist from sister Gianna D'Errico.
Saint Rose has now outscored its opponents this season 20-3.
