'BEACON OF HOPE'
Breakfast inaugurates scholarship program
The Diocese of Albany is providing a "beacon of hope" through a new scholarship program for those who desire a Catholic education but are not able to afford it, the diocesan Catholic Schools Office announced this week.
The "Beacon of Hope" scholarship program will be launched at a kick-off fundraising breakfast, Sept. 26, 8-9 a.m., at the Italian American Community Center in Albany.
The event, sponsored by the Bank of America, will be hosted by Bishop Howard J. Hubbard and Sister Mary Jane Herb, IHM, superintendent of Diocesan Schools.
"Our goal is to make Catholic education accessible to those who truly want it, but perhaps could not otherwise afford it if not for a scholarship program," Sister Jane explained.
The scholarships will sponsor children from low-income families at $1,500 per year, approximately half the cost of an elementary school tuition.
"Our prayer is that individuals, corporations and others committed to supporting the future of Catholic schools will seize this opportunity to be a beacon of hope for young people throughout the Albany Diocese," said Nicki Pezzulo, director of development for diocesan schools. "Their contributions are investments in the future of our children and our communities."
