GOOD NEWS FOR KIDS
Bread of life or energy drink?
Jesus, help me eat healthy - and keep my soul healthy, by staying close to you! Amen.
"Do a miracle, and we'll believe in you," a crowd told Jesus. "Moses gave starving people bread from heaven, once. What can you do?" Jesus answered: "Only God gives bread from heaven. God sent me - I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me and believes in me will never be hungry or thirsty."
Commercials and ads for energy drinks seem to be everywhere. The people in the ads act like you could drink one gulp and run 10 miles! It's a good thing you know that's not true: People need real food and water to survive.
An energy drink might give you a temporary boost, but that's only because it's full of sugar, caffeine and other unhealthy stuff. Healthy foods give you energy that lasts longer and doesn't hurt you.
This week's Gospel (John 6:24-35) is about temporary energy boosts - and permanent ones. People have heard Jesus can do miracles, so they're following Him around, hoping to see something cool.
They point out that Moses, another holy man, once gave people bread from heaven called "manna" when they were starving. Why, they wonder, won't Jesus do something like that?
But Jesus' miracles aren't like energy drinks! Jesus didn't come here to give people a temporary boost that will wear off and leave them feeling sick and needing more.
Jesus calls Himself "the bread of life." He means that He can give a kind of nourishment that quick-energy foods can't: He can satisfy people's hunger for God. You can be full of energy and full of food, but you still need God to be full of life![[In-content Ad]]
