Bigger than a war

On September 11, some bad people attacked our country. Since then, America has been at war with them, hoping that will stop them from ever hurting us again.

War is a big, scary thing. We don't know what will happen or how it will end. But this week's Gospel (Luke 21:5-19) says something that might make us feel better: that Jesus is more powerful than anything and is always watching over us.

Jesus heard people talking about how beautiful their temple was. He told them, "Someday, it will be torn down." "When?" they asked. "When the end of the world is coming," Jesus said, "when there will be wars, earthquakes, sickness and starving people everywhere. Some of you will even be arrested for believing in me. But don't worry -- I'll be there to take care of you."

War is scary because people get hurt. The people who attacked us killed lots of Americans, especially at the World Trade Center, and our bombs will hurt people in their country, too.

In the Gospel story, Jesus says when the end of the world comes someday, it'll be like a war at first, too.

The good news for kids right now is that all the grownups around you are there to take care of you. Your parents and teachers are making sure you're safe, and the soldiers, police and firefighters are working to make the whole country safe.

Jesus wanted everyone to know they're not the only ones looking out for you; He's there, too! Whether it's a war with another country or the end of the world, you don't have to worry about whether God is taking care of you. Jesus promised He would always be there to hear our prayers and watch over us -- especially when bad stuff happens.

Jesus is bigger than any war.

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me pray for peace! Amen.
