Being together is special
It's fun to go to your favorite places with the people you like. You get excited about seeing a movie with your dad, playing with your friends at a park or swimming in your cousin's pool.
But sometimes, you don't care what you do, as long as you're together. It doesn't have to be anything special; you just want to spent time together.
Jesus felt like that. In this week's Gospel (John 17:20-26), He prays to God the Father, spending time with Him -- and also prays that His followers will get really close to God, and they'll all be together someday in heaven.
"Father," Jesus said, "I'm praying that my followers will be as close to you as I am, that we'll all be one. I wish that they will be in heaven with me, and that they'll love each other as much as you love me."
Why is it that when you care about someone, just hanging out with that person is as good as doing something exciting? You feel good no matter what you do because you know the person loves you, so you're happy when you're around them.
Jesus was always happy to pray, because He was spending time with someone He loved -- His Father. Since Jesus and God the Father (and the Holy Spirit) are really the same person, they liked being together!
Jesus also loved His friends and wanted the best for them -- heaven, where they could all hang out together forever.
Whether you're at the movies, the park, the pool or home, love is what makes people want to be together. Just like you don't have to do anything special to have fun, Jesus didn't pray that He, His Father and His followers take a trip or see a show. He just prayed that they kept loving each other -- and that was enough!
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me remember that any time I spend with people I love is special. Amen!
