Basketball highlights
The Class AA high school basketball sectionals began last weekend, and two Catholic schools advanced to the semi-finals.
On Feb. 26, Christian Broth-ers Academy in Colonie used a 20-point performance from Kameron Ritter to rout Bethlehem, 79-48. CBA's Max Weaver contributed 13 points and Galal Cancer had 11 points.
Bishop Maginn High School in Albany also won their first-round game against Shaker, 80-72. Jerel Scott and John Scurry were responsible for more than half of the Griffins' points. Scott led all scorers with 27 and Scurry added 21.
Both teams continued to roll the following day. Kameron Ritter scored 18 points en route to CBA's 45-29 quarter-final victory over Troy, and Maginn used a strong second half to defeat Albany Academy, 54-37.
Both teams played their semi-final games March 2, after The Evangelist went to press, with CBA taking on Albany High and Bishop Maginn taking on Shenendehowa.
In girls' high school basketball sectionals, two Catholic schools also won their first-round playoff games: On Feb. 27, Sarah Agan scored 20 points for the Academy of Holy Names in Albany, which went on to win its quarter-final matchup against Lansingburgh, 55-33. Jackie Murphy scored 19 for Holy Names.
Catholic Central High School in Troy also advanced with a 49-34 victory over Bethlehem. Maria Foglia of CCHS led all scorers with 20 points.
Both teams played their next games March 2. Holy Names took on Ichabod Crane and CCHS faced Shenendehowa.
Siena College in Loudonville celebrated its greatest senior class in school history Feb. 28, prior to the final regular season game against Marist at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Alex Franklin, Edwin Ubiles and Ronald Moore led the Saints to three straight MAAC regular season championships and two straight MAAC tournament championships, as well as two first-round upsets in the NCAA tournament.
Following the celebration, the big three again put on a show. Ubiles led all scorers with 21 points, Franklin recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds and Moore dished out 12 assists, as Siena rolled against arch-rival Marist, 76-51.
Siena will now look to claim its third consecutive MAAC championship and automatic bid to the NCAA tournament this weekend at the Times Union Center.
