Based on a Bible story
In the story of the Visitation, a pregnant Mary traveled to visit her cousin Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist, to assist her.
Meg Bergh of the diocesan Family Life Office pointed out that each woman was pregnant in atypical situations: Elizabeth, too old to have children, had been criticized for being barren while Mary was very young and found herself pregnant before marriage.
The story of the Visitation is what drew Cathy Carrass, a parishioner at St. Luke's Church in Schenectady, to the ministry.
"I was asked to join and said yes because the story of Elizabeth and Mary is dear to my heart," she said. "Mary and Elizabeth were there for each other. I wanted to be there for someone else." (MM)
