Ballston school expands

"There is a history of Catholic education in this town," explained Sister Ranah Phelan, CSJ, principal. "What we are seeing is a commitment of parishioners to their future and the future of their children in the Catholic faith. This is exciting for us; but more importantly, we see it as the continuation of God's work in this community."

The new wing will help the school to more easily accommodate the 214 students already enrolled there from pre-K through 6th grade -- and meet the expected increase in enrollment in the future.

Building up

"The building project is providing a fascinating opportunity for the children," Sister Ranah said. "It has made for some interesting dialogue."

Some teachers have even used the process as learning opportunities. "One of the math classes completed a project on measurement and predictions probability as a result of all that's going on," she said.

Additions

"We are very lucky to have a media specialist here on staff, Sister Deborah Timmins, CSJ. She has been working with the planners, and we are very excited about our new computer lab," Sister Ranah said.

There will also be a state-of-the-art, high-tech audio/visual room with stage and "surround sound" that will seat up to 85 people. This will provide space not only for the school but also for workshops and parish events.

In addition, the existing building will be updated with fresh paint in each classroom, a new music/arts room, new chalkboards, carpeting and a renovation of the gym.

Growing

"Three years ago, we had about 1,500 families registered in the parish," he said. "Now we have just over 2,000."
