Q-&-A WITH MRS. GREEN
Award-winning teacher is 'a kid forever'
After 25 years of service there, she has been selected to receive the 2011 National Catholic Educational Association's distinguished teacher award for her work and educational leadership.
Growing up in a large family, her love of fun, children and learning led Mrs. Green to earn her Master's degree in early childhood education and her New York State teaching certificate.
Today, the avid exerciser enjoys spending time with her father; her husband, Michael; and her daughters, Jennifer and Stefanie. Mrs. Green will receive her award at the 2011 NCEA convention in New Orleans in April.
When and why did you realize you wanted to become a teacher?
When I was just a child: I had seven brothers and sisters, so I was always around kids and always loved them. I knew I wanted to be with them, helping them and having fun. I know this was God's plan for me.
Why teach Kindergarten?
Because I get to be a kid forever! It keeps me young, goofy, silly - and they love it. They're so trusting and so much fun. I love my job! There's never a dull moment. I'm alive when I come here and my excitement transfers onto them.
Who was your inspiration growing up?
My parents, of course; they always encouraged me. But also my fourth grade teacher, Sister Cleophine. She made everything fun, even learning.
Was your family supportive?
Yes. My husband always tells me, "You're making the difference, so keep doing what you're doing."
What's your favorite game to play with your students?
"Exercise time": After lunch, we do hokey pokey, aerobics, "brain boogie" and dancing. Then we tone it down and focus again. I try to keep my students active.
What were your expectations for being a teacher?
I wanted to be able to meet the needs of every child in my classroom and make them better people. I wanted to help them feel good about themselves.
How has teaching changed in the past 25 years?
The curriculum has changed. What was once the curriculum for first grade is now expected in Kindergarten: Reading, math skills, writing and science experiments are now beginning in Kindergarten along with the lessons in sharing and cooperating.
What is the hardest part of your job?
Having enough time - not that I'm [in favor of] the full school year, but there's so much to give them and there's just never enough time.
Do you have a secret vice?
No. Ask anyone who works with me - I have no secrets. People know everything about me. In fact, I'm sure they wish I did have things I kept to myself.
What is your favorite prayer?
The "Memorare." I say it all the time.
What do you want others to know about being a teacher?
It is definitely one of the most rewarding jobs you can have. The morals and values you can instill in these students is so rewarding. And by working in a Catholic school, I'm able to pray in school and bring God into the classroom.
How did you react to receiving an award?
It's unbelievable. I'm humbled and grateful. When I was awarded by the Diocese, that was one honor; but with this national award, I was shocked. I've just been doing what I love to do and being recognized for that is great. I'm overjoyed - but, when I step into my classroom, I don't think about it. I just think, "Let's get back to business here."
If you found $20, what would you do with it?
First, I'd look around to see if it belonged to anyone. Then, I would spend it on lotto tickets. I love them, love them, love them. But even if I won a million dollars, I would still work here - that way, I could buy more!
What is your favorite Bible story?
When Jesus said, "Let the children come to me." He sums it up right there: He says, "No matter what, I'm never too tired for them."
