Athens youth had `capital' idea
Recently, seventh graders in the religious education program at St. Patrick's parish in Athens decided to donate some of their free time to the parish by participating in a fund-raiser held for the benefit of the Bishop's diocesan capital campaign effort.
Pitching in
When the students heard of the campaign, they decided to join the parish's effort in raising money for diocesan development by having a bake sale at all masses the weekend after Thanksgiving.According to Ms. Marge Murphy, the program's director, their dedication and energy in planning the bake sale was amazing.
"We are so proud of them all," she said adding "we thank and applaud each and every one of them for their hard work and enthusiasm."
Roll call
Seventh-grade students participating in the fundraiser included Gregory Bruno, Casey Clark, Samantha Dickson, Zachary Dickson, Priscilla Frisbee, Timothy June, Michael Lent, Michael Loglio, Mark Nazi, Renee Paquette, Evan Severance and Erica Wolfe.THe students set up the bake sale in the parish hall and "manned" the tables, filled with donated home-baked goods for each of the weekend's three Masses -- the 5:30 p.m. vigil Mass on Saturday and the 8 and 10:30 a.m. Masses on Sunday.
Sellout
The bake sale was so popular with parishioners that most of the goods had been sold by the last mass."They actually ran out of baked goods before the 10:30 mass," said Ms. Murphy.
In addition to the bake sale, the students also staged a free raffle and giveaway of two Hallmark Christmas ornaments. Parishioners Theresa Delvecchio and Tommy Tompkins won the popular Christmas items.
Donation applauded
After the bake sale, the students tallied up their windfall and donated the $250 they made to the proceeds the parish collected for the capital campaign."Our capital campaign was very successful this year," said Ms. Murphy, adding that the student's contribution to that effort was greatly appreciated by everyone in the parish.
