Antique kneeler connects family

The one symbol I feel relates to me the most is an antique kneeler that my family now owns. There are three main reasons this kneeler means so much to me.

One is that my grandparents brought it from Paris and gave it to us. The second is that it is a very beautiful piece of antique furniture. Last, but not least, this kneeler has been passed down through my family and many other families throughout the years.

When my grandparents moved from Maine to South Carolina they worried that the kneeler would get ruined in the moving truck on their way to their new home. Since moving took up most of their time and energy, they did not need to worry about this, too. My family and I happened to be visiting them when they were talking about the dilemma.

My grandmother asked us if we could take it back to New York. I am glad my grandparents gave us the kneeler because it will always make me think of them. It will be nice to have such an important memento to remember them by. We now keep the kneeler in our living room where we can always look at it, reminding us of our grandparents and God.

The kneeler is very beautiful indeed. It has a dark, oak wood frame. In the center of the frame, there is a wooden cross. The cross is surrounded by other pieces that weave into the edges of the cross.\

The place where you kneel is a piece of wood that has a soft material on top of the wood and fabric on top of that. The fabric is very soft, so it does not hurt your knees when you kneel. The fabric is worn, gold velvet.

For decoration, it has stripes, flowers, and leaves. I think that the flowers and leaves stand for the nature that God created. I enjoy looking at the kneeler. Its beauty reminds me of God, because everything God has made is beautiful in its own way.

This piece of work has been passed down since the 1860s. During that time in America, a Civil War was going on. Europe was not happy with America to begin with for having slaves. They were still upset that some parts of the U.S. continued to have slaves. Therefore, some part of Europe probably prayed for America, so that slavery would be ended for good.

I like to sit and think about how different families felt during this time in the world. How they must have prayed on the kneeler for peace in every part of their country and others. God comes to mind because God created them and their special bond that kept them together.

I am truly blessed to have such a wonderful gift that most people cannot have. I appreciate the fact that I have the privilege to pray in my own home on a kneeler that most people only get to use during church. I will treasure this great gift forever.

I hope to share this offering with my children someday. Maybe they will love it the way I do. I will tell them that whenever they look at it, they should pray for their family. It stands for family and togetherness.

The kneeler has been through many generations of families, praying together in hope of changing the world, one prayer at a time.
