Jesus, teach me to pray whenever I'm worried about a "what if," and let you take care of me! Amen.
Jesus heard people talking about how beautiful their temple was. "Someday, it will be torn down," He told them. "When?" they asked. "When the end of the world comes," Jesus said; "when there will be wars, earthquakes, sickness and starving people everywhere. Some of you will even be arrested for believing in me. But don't worry -- I'll be there to take care of you."
"What ifs" can worry a kid. What if your homework is too hard this year? What if no one shows up for your party? What if your parents' arguing means they're getting a divorce?
A lot of "what ifs" are really worries about being alone. You want to do well in school, get a part in the play or a spot on the team, have friends at your party and have a happy family because we all want people in our lives.
Jesus says to let Him worry about that. In this week's Gospel (Luke 21:5-19), He promises that no matter what happens -- wars, storms or even the end of the world -- He will always be looking out for us.
Even when things are going well, a "what if" can pass through your mind: What if it doesn't stay this way? The people in the Gospel story looked at their beautiful temple (like a church) and even Jesus said it wouldn't always be there. It's easy to get caught up in "what ifs." But Jesus wanted us to enjoy the good things we have today, whether it's a beautiful building or a peaceful moment.
He also said that, yes, bad things do happen. Sometimes, a "what if" that you're worried about does come true. That's why Jesus said even if that happens, He'll be there for you.
Do your part, Jesus told everyone: Go to church, pray, be kind and take care of each other and stay close to God. That way, whenever a "what if" is bothering you, you'll know who to turn to and talk about your worries. Jesus will be there through every "what if," all the way to the end of the world.[[In-content Ad]]
