HOLY SITES
Albany County contains historic churches to visit
In particular, the City of Albany houses two special holy sites:
* The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is celebrating its sesquicentennial this year as it undergoes a massive facelift. Tourists shouldn't let the scaffolding outside deter them from stepping inside to see the many statues and other religious items. Also on display are panels recounting the history of the Albany Diocese; they were prepared for its sesquicentennial in 1997. For information or to find out about tours, call 463-4447.
* St. Mary's Church is a resplendent example of what restoration can achieve. The church was refurbished a few years ago, with the result that the gilded interior is breath-taking and the artworks are inspiring. Founded before the Albany Diocese was, St. Mary's has been a landmark since 1797. For information, visit www.hist-stmarys.org or call 462-4254.
Albany County contains dozens of churches in several towns, from Ravena in the south to Cohoes in the north and Berne in the west. They offer an array of architectural styles from Gothic to modern.
