St. Mary’s-St. Alphonsus Catholic School in Glens Falls took home top honors in two grade levels at the recent “Battle of the Books,” a reading competition sponsored by the WSWHE BOCES School Library Services. Teams competed at SUNY Adirondack.

Grades 3 and 5 won their respective divisions at the event in which students, beginning in September, read 10 books (five fiction, five nonfiction) and then enter a contest to see how many questions they can answer correctly about the books. Students were assisted by Mary Kay Ilowiecki, the librarian at the school, as well as parent-coaches. The first Battle of the Books took place in 2012 and, this year, 535 students from 56 teams in Grades 3-6 participated.

The school also received a visit from Giovanni Virgiglio, diocesan superintendent of schools, to congratulate them on their efforts.
