THE END GOAL OF BABYSITTING
Jesus, help me focus on the end goal of whatever I'm doing! Amen.
"The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field," Jesus said. "Whoever finds it sells all they have to buy that field. The kingdom of heaven is also like someone looking for pearls; she'll sell everything she has to buy a good one. The kingdom of heaven is like a fishing net: It collects all kinds of fish, but only the good ones are kept. The rest are thrown away."
Babysitting is one way kids can earn money. Of course, that means giving up your free time and putting up with kids who may not always behave well. There's also the responsibility of being in someone else's home; you have to respect the family's privacy and property.
In the end, babysitting can be worth it, because you get experience having a job and you get the money you worked so hard to earn!
This week's Gospel (Matthew 13:44-52) is about dealing with what you don't want in order to get to what you do. Jesus shares several parables (stories) about heaven and how to end up there.
In one story, Jesus says that getting to heaven is like looking for a pearl: Someone who's really into jewelry will give up other possessions to get that perfect pearl.
If you've babysat, you can probably relate to that. You have given up doing other things to earn money and get job experience by taking care of kids. Babysitting can be wonderful and fun, but also tiring and a pain. To get through an evening of misbehaving kids, you have to keep looking at the end goal.
Being a good person is also uncomfortable at times. It's hard to treat people well if they're nasty to you. It's hard to show up for people in need when you'd rather do something else. It's hard to give up clothing or toys for others, collect money at a fundraiser or serve lunch at a food pantry.
Jesus promises it will all be worth it.[[In-content Ad]]
