Pro-abortion resolution fails
The resolution recognized a group called "Champions of Choice," scheduled to have a luncheon the next day to "celebrate the anniversary of legalized abortion."
In a rare display of opposition to a resolution of that sort, seven Assembly members in a row -- Democrats and Republicans, pro-life and pro-abortion -- stood to vehemently object. They called it "disrespectful," "outrageous," "insulting" and "demeaning to those who oppose abortion on moral grounds."
Even members with pro-abortion voting records, such as Nancy Calhoun (R-New Windsor) and George Winner (R-Elmira), stated that the issue divides the people of the state, and the legalization of abortion is not something to be "celebrated."
Assembly member Joel Miller (R-Poughkeepsie), while noting his pro-abortion feelings, stated: "To dance on the graves of the unborn is a terrible thing to do."
The seven members who spoke on the floor of the Assembly to object to the resolution were: Anthony Seminerio (D-Queens), Nancy Calhoun (R-New Windsor), Chris Ortloff (R-Plattsburgh), Denis Butler (D-Queens), Patrick Manning (R-Hopewell Junction), Joel Miller (R-Poughkeepsie) and George Winner (R-Elmira).
In what observers said was an unprecedented action, Assemblyman Gottfried then withdrew the resolution. He stated that the word "celebrate" was used in the resolution to mean "observe with respect," not to signify a party.
He explained the significance of the legalization of abortion to him and to others, "deeply regretting" that that sentiment of the resolution had been lost. He said he did not wish to cause discomfort or division in the body, so he decided to withdraw the resolution.
