PETER'S PENCE

Collection aids pope in helping others

On the weekend of July 25-26, the annual Peter's Pence collection for support of the Holy Father will be taken up at Masses in parishes throughout the Albany Diocese.

The collection provides emergency assistance to those suffering from the effects of war, oppression, disease and natural disasters.

"Every year, when the Peter's Pence collection is taken up around the world...Catholics in the United States are extraordinarily generous," Bishop Howard J. Hubbard said in a pulpit letter read at parishes prior to the collection.

"The theme for this year's collection, 'Cast the Light of Christ Upon the World,' reflects the call to action for the Church in the United States as expressed by Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to the United States in April 2008," said Rev. Kenneth Doyle, diocesan chancellor for public information, in another letter.

The 2008 collection total has not yet been announced by the Vatican, but the 2007 worldwide collection totaled more than $79.8 million. American Catholics were the top donors, contributing more than $18.7 million.

Funds from the Peter's Pence collection have helped Rwandan orphans who were victims of genocide and civil war, development projects in sub-Saharan Africa and peasants and indigenous people in Latin America.

"I ask you to be generous in the upcoming Peter's Pence collection in your parish," Bishop Hubbard told Catholics in the Diocese. "Together, let us ask the Lord to bless the Holy Father, us, and all those in need throughout the world."
