SCHENECTADY SERVICE: MIDDLE-SCHOOL STUDENTS at Our Lady Queen of Peace parish in Schenectady and its mission, St. Margaret of Cortona Church in Rotterdam Junction, have been serving fellow residents of the city who are struggling. They made 368 snack bags for homeless, disabled and needy patrons of Bethesda House and for kids helped by the ecumenical Schenectady Inner City Ministry.

Immaculate Conception parish in Glenville notes that its office manager, FRAN SZPYLCZYN, gave a presentation at the Islamic Center of the Capital District on her trip to Spain to walk the Camino de Santiago.

Immaculate Conception parish put rocks in the church for Lent to visually represent Jesus in the desert. "What do these rocks represent for you? God as your rock? Your rock hardened heart? A place to sit and rest? Something to hide behind? The rocks are calling out to you, inviting you to deal with things in your lives," the parish bulletin noted.

Vessels used for the Eucharist at Immaculate Conception during Lent were made by local artisan and potter JAMES SANKOWSKI, who died recently. They show "how we are formed by the Divine Potter," said the parish bulletin.

Also, the parish had its annual father/daughter dance. The CYO basketball team representing both Immaculate Conception parish in Glenville and St. Joseph's in Scotia concluded its season with a record of 16-2 against other CYO teams, and also won the Schenectady County tournament. Members of the team include RYAN ALLEN, CADE CERCONE, CAM CREMO, CALEB HUSSEY, BEN KLINE, SEAN MCLAUGHLIN, AIDAN MORRISON, JAKE PASSINO, MATT SHOW and JACK TAYLOR. JEFF CERCONE is the volunteer coach....

St. Michael's parish in Troy hosted a Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County "Your Scrabble Challenge" fundraiser. It helps Literacy Volunteers offer free tutoring in reading and writing, English as a second language and high-school equivalency prep for adults. Also, St. Michael's has a new parishioner who gives sewing lessons and offers sewing programs for eight-year-olds through adults.

Ninth-grader TRISTON LINCOLN of St. Michael's collected basketball sneakers and socks for the Boys and Girls Troy CYO. As a member of this organization for years, he witnessed that need for proper footwear by some children there -- both for performance and for safety. Thirteen-year-old SHAY KERWIN has been working since losing his father five years ago to raise awareness of heart disease and to support the American Heart Association. On June 3, he'll participate in the AHA's Heart Walk. Last year, parishioners helped him raise more than $5,000 in his father's memory. He's been manning a table at the parish with information and selling AHA bracelets and pins....

St. Mary's in Glens Falls cheered about "the generosity of two individuals whose donations have covered the cost of the church's new carillon system."

Teens from St. Mary's in Glens Falls had a food fast for 24 hours to raise awareness and funds for refugees. Donations were sent to Catholic Relief Services. They also collected art supplies for children and teen refugees settling in the Albany area....

ALLIE GARDNER of Sacred Heart parish in Albany was named Miss Limerick 2017 at a special breakfast before St. Patrick's Day. A senior at Albany High School, she's also a member of the parish council, eucharistic minister, food pantry volunteer and occasional cellist with the parish choir. JOHN AND CAROL MCAULIFFE were named Mr. and Mrs. Limerick; they're also eucharistic ministers at Sacred Heart, and Mr. McAuliffe is a parish trustee....

St. Joseph's parish in Schenectady announced that four $500 BERADINE HERSKIND/CATHERINE YUSTEN scholarships are available for elementary, middle or high school students. They come from a bequest from a parishioner of the city's former Sacred Heart/St. Columba parish and are administered by St. Joseph's Christian service committee....

Music director MARK BROCKLEY provided coat hooks for parishioners at Sacred Heart Church in Castleton. Other parish volunteers have been collecting and sorting coupons so all parishioners can get coupons they need....

The religious sisters who run St. Joseph's Place in Schenectady, a drop-in center for people in the Hamilton Hill area, were interviewed about their work on a Schenectady Public Access television program called "The Muffin Man." Watch it at www.sacc.tv....

Annunciation parish in Ilion planned to unveil a new tabernacle April 15 at its Easter vigil Mass....

St. John the Evangelist parish in Schenectady hosted a seder meal April 12, a Jewish Passover meal like the Last Supper, with symbolic foods served....

St. Edward's parish in Clifton Park was one of many having an Easter egg hunt for children up to grade five, hosted by teens who will attend National Catholic Youth Conference and those from the parish youth ministry. St. Edward's is also forming an elementary youth group for children in preschool through sixth grade. Parishioners recently made palm crosses for shut-ins and nursing home residents....

DEACON MICHAEL JABLONSKI, formerly of St. Joseph's parish in Dolgeville/Holy Family in Little Falls, is being ordained a priest of the Diocese of Ogdensburg May 27, and parishioners are planning a bus trip to attend....

St. Pius X parish in Loudonville is starting a "Sunday parents' group" for those dropping their children off for religious education on Sunday mornings who want to talk to about their own faith...

St. Stanislaus parish in Amsterdam now has an "inspiration corner." Parishioners can post an image, prayer or quote on a bulletin board in the parish hall. The parish is already preparing for Christmas by having all 20 of its Nativity figures restored and is asking parishioners to "adopt" one by covering the cost. Call (518) 842-2771....

Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Watervliet has a new part-time music director: FRANK PREZIO, who has extensive experience in directing, cantoring and developing liturgical music. IHM has a Lenten prayer banner allowing parishioners to place on a paper cross the name of a person or intention that they're praying for this Lent and pin it to the banner....

First-graders at Our Lady of Victory parish in Troy collected coins for a "Change for Change" Lenten almsgiving project. ISABELLA SANO amassed $100, having told her parents she wanted all the money from her piggy bank to go to kids in an orphanage because "they need it more than I do"....

CHRISI YOUNG is the new pastoral associate for faith development for St. Matthew's parish in Voorheesville. She's been a parishioner for 20 years and has a decade of catechetical experience....

St. Cecilia's parish in Warrensburg notes that donations to its rice bowl campaign support two students named Cecilia from Windhoek, Namibia, whom the parish will provide with uniforms, shoes and school supplies so they can attend school....

St. Clement's parish in Saratoga Springs has been seeking a volunteer coordinator for its health ministry as well as members for the Arimathea ministry, who assist at funerals (call Becky, 518-584-6122, ext. 13).
