North Country Ministry fights ever-present Adirondack poverty
Last Christmas, a single father stopped at North Country Ministry to pick up donated Christmas presents for his five-year-old son. As he accepted the gifts, he couldn't look the NCM caseworker in the eye -- but he pulled a $5 bill out of his pocket and held it out to her.
"This is the last money I have, but I have to do something for the ministry, after you've done so much for my son," he said.

Volunteers from Diocese heading south to help after hurricanes
"If Yeshua [Jesus] was here, would He say I'm too old to do this? He'd say, 'I'll give you the strength. I'll give you the grace. Go,'" said 71-year-old Phyllis Mescia.
Mrs. Mescia, a parishioner of Holy Spirit Church in East Greenbush, is volunteering with relief efforts after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Scharfenberger has announced the appointment of Mary DeTurris Poust, diocesan director of communications, to the newly-created position of associate publisher of The Evangelist, effective immediately. In this additional role, she will work closely with the editor on setting the tone and direction of the paper going forward.

To Rev. Thomas Connery, his old seminary classmate was "a big guy from a farming family" who loved music and worked hard.
To Rev. Alan Jupin, who was a year ahead of Rev. Stanley Rother at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Maryland, Father Rother was "a nice guy, quiet," who struggled to learn the Latin, Greek and Hebrew required in studying for the priesthood.
To Rev. James Donlon of the Albany diocesan Tribunal, who visited the site of Father Rother's 1981 torture and martyrdom in Guatemala, the future saint was "one of us! A mere diocesan priest, who was called to ministry and mission, and responded."
